Meridian High School Coach Ed Stanley gave him his first opportunity to coach at Northeast Mississippi Community College loacted in Booneville, Miss. Thompson coached linebackers in 2006 and safeties in 2007. In 2008, Thompson was defensive coordinator at Kemper County High School in De Kalb, Miss., and in 2009 Thompson went to OPSU to be the defensive backs coach and has been here since. Coach Gaskamp on Coach Thompson: "Coach Thompson has been instrumental in this transition phase of the football program. It was very obvious to me that the players liked and respected him as a coach and as a person off the field. He coordinated the defense in the spring, and our defensive philosophies are very similar. He is ready to take the next step as a coach and I am very happy to promote him. It was also important to me that he was an alumnus of the school and he understands the commitment and hard work it is going to take to build a consistent winner. Coach Thompson will recruit the state of Oklahoma, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Junior Colleges."
