The AAS in Nursing Program is brought to Oklahoma Panhandle State University by the Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City Nurse Science Department via the Internet. The Nurse Science courses include online delivery of didactic content, skill laboratory instruction on the OPSU campus, and clinical experiences in affiliated agencies in the Goodwell, OK area. General education and related courses are not included as an online component of this program. Campus attendance is required for skills labs, clinical experiences and exams.
The program is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing and approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education. The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree is granted by OSU-OKC.
Students may take general prerequisite courses at OPSU either before or while in the nursing program. Nursing courses include classroom and laboratory experience. During the supervised practicum students apply concepts, techniques and skills acquired through campus classroom experiences.
The associate degree program in nursing is designed to prepare students for immediate employment upon graduation. Graduates are qualified to take the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurse licensure. Students graduating with an AAS degree may articulate directly into the Bachelor of Science Nursing program (RN-BSN).
Program Requirements
A retention grade point average of at least 2.5 on college work completed is necessary in order to be considered for the nursing courses. High school transcripts and/or GED scores are evaluated if no college work has been completed. The following factors are considered in selecting students:
- GPA of previous academic work
- HESI A2 scores (Preadmission Examination)
- Required general education and related
Students will be accepted into the nursing program in the Fall Semester each year. Deadline for application submission is June 1st.
All required documents must be in the nursing office by dates published for the Fall semester. Students are encouraged to complete a portion of the general education and related courses prior to seeking admission to the nursing program.
After admission into the nursing program, the nursing courses must be taken sequentially as listed. All students considering entrance into the nursing programs extended campus are urged to seek advisement from advisors in the OPSU nursing department. The nursing department is located on the third floor of Hesper Hall on the Goodwell campus. Interested students may call 800-664-OPSU, extension 1520.
Advanced Standing for LPNs
The nursing program at OSU-OKC offers advanced standing to licensed practical nurses who qualify.
In order to receive advanced standing and be admitted to the nursing program,
an LPN must complete all required prerequisite courses, and receive a passing score on written examinations.
LPNs who graduated from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program will receive special consideration.
Many LPNs have been successful in completing the nursing program and have achieved registered nurse licensure.

NURS 1213 Role Transition is required for LPN's seeking admission.
Advanced Standing for Paramedics
The nursing program at OSU-OKC offers advanced standing to licensed paramedics who qualify.
In order to receive advanced standing and be admitted to the nursing program, a paramedic must complete all required prerequisite courses, provide documentation of at least 1,000 hours of paramedic practice within the previous three years, and receive a passing score on written examinations.
NURS 1213 Role Transition is required for paramedics seeking admission. Interested applicants may elect to test out of NURS 1116 and NURS 1128.
