Busienei Earns Fourth in Conference Cross Country Meet —By Laura Nelson on 10/21/2012 Wichita, Kan.—Gideon Busienei earned fourth place at the Heartland Conference cross country meet on Saturday, finishing the 8k course in 26:15.05.
Even though he cut his time by 26 seconds over his first place Conference finish last year, this year's field was more competitive, as Joshua Pauley of Dallas Baptist won it with a time of 25:40.6. Busienei's brother, Mark Tuwei, finished 11th with a time of 27:07.60.
Busienei also earned a spot on the 2012 Heartland All-Conference Team and Tuwei was named Honorable Mention. Other OPSU men competing were Eddie Fierro, Clint Horton, Tyler Stephens, Felipe Salinas, and Mike Wiebe.
In the women's 6k, Teenie Kent was the top OPSU finisher with a time of 24:35.75, good enough for 17th. Head coach Victor Esparza said, "I thought Teenie ran extremely well and earned her best 6k time." Michelle Kent finished 29th with a time of 26:12.55 and other women on the OPSU team were Korie Ham, Brittany White, Emily Vasquez, and Megan Matejovsky.
Esparza continued, "I was extremely proud of everyone. This is the best group of kids that I have been around since I took over the cross country team. They give everything they have and that is a joy to be around."
The runners compete at the NCAA South Central Regional Championship on Nov. 3 in Denver.
