Beef Bull Performance Test Update

—Submitted by Gwen Martin on 01/02/2013 Goodwell, Okla.—The beef bulls on performance test at Oklahoma Panhandle State University were weighed Dec. 29 after completing 84 days of the 112 day test. Through the 84 days the bulls have an overall average daily gain of 4.45 lbs. per day. The senior age bulls were scanned for fat thickness, rib eye area and intramuscular fat and the junior age bulls will be scanned on January 11. The top 70 bulls, based on average daily gain (ADG) and weight-per-day-of-age (WDA), will sell in the 61st Annual OPSU Performance Tested Bull Sale February 18, 2013.

Phil Light, Turpin, Okla. has the first and second top junior age bulls with ADGs of 5.69 and 5.58 lbs., respectively. His first place bull is a son of GAR Progress and his second place bull is a son of Connealy Final Product. J-C Angus Ranch, Moriarty, N.M. has the third place junior with an ADG of 5.52 lbs. on a son of J-C SS Objective 0852.

Phil Light also leads the way in the junior age pen division with the top two pens on gains of 4.76 lbs. and 4.67 lbs. per day. The sire of the top pen is Connealy Final Product and the sire of the second ranked pen is GAR Progress. In third place is OPSU's pen of three Angus with an ADG of 4.62 lbs. on two sons of B&M Right Time 667 and a son of GAR OAF 1I2 Rito 7041G.

The senior age bulls are led by an H&H Simmental bull with an ADG of 6.21 lbs. The bull is sired by Flying B Cut Above. Wink Farms of Panhandle, Texas has the second ranked senior with an ADG of 6.0 lbs. on a son of Bon View New Design 1407. Al Rutledge of Stillwater, Okla. has the third ranked senior with an ADG of 5.76 lbs. on a son of SAF Connection.

In the senior age pen division, Wink Farms has the first and third ranked pens with ADGs of 5.50 lbs. and 4.80 lbs. A pen of five Angus consigned by Howard McCall of Albuquerque, N.M. is in second place with an ADG of 5.45 lbs. on sons of Sitz Upward 307R, Connealy Consensus 7229 and SAV Final Answer 0035. OPSU's pen of six Angus sired by GAR OAF 1I2 Rito 7041G is in fourth place with an ADG of 4.73 lbs.
