Dustdevils Blow by Aggie Women —By Laura Nelson on 01/04/2013 Laredo, Texas—The women of the OPSU basketball team played a conference game Thursday night in Laredo against conference rival Texas A&M International, and even though the Aggies kept the score close in the first half, the Dustdevils spun out a 75-61 win as they improved their scoring in the second period.
With less than a minute into the game, Aggies Shayla Mathis and Sharice Papaleo both scored jump shots to put OPSU ahead 4-0. The Dustdevils soon tied it up and the teams continued to trade the lead until about five and a half minutes were left. At that point, TAMI's dynamic duo of the evening, Samantha Chacon and Tina Dang, scored 11 between them while holding OPSU to a single point. The Aggies rallied back with back-to-back 3-pointers from Whitley Coca and Rosa Quinonez, but the score at the buzzer put the home team ahead 31-26.
At the beginning of the second half, two made shots from the free throw line by Shayla Mathis coupled with a 3-point shot from Sarah Johnson tied the score. Again, the teams fought hard for the lead and the score was tied twice more before TAMI began to pull ahead and remained in the lead, ending the game with a 75-61 win over OPSU.
Dustdevil Dang led the scoring with 20 while teammate Chacon put in 18. For the Aggies, Coca scored twelve and took down 6 rebounds while Da'Veonna Munson chipped in 10 points. OPSU scored only 28.6 percent from the field while TAMI was 43.5 percent. The loss puts the women's overall season record at 3-9 and 0-1 in conference play.
The women travel to San Antonio to play another conference game against the St. Mary's University Rattlers on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. and the women will have their hands full against the 8-3 Rattlers. Live stats will be available at www.stmarytx.edu/athletics/.
