**For Immediate Release** OPSU Softball Drops Two in Midwestern Tournament By Laura Nelson on 03/01/2013 Wichita Falls, Texas—The Oklahoma Panhandle State University softball team got off to a slow start Friday in the Midwestern State University Invitational, dropping games to Northeastern Oklahoma State University and Abilene Christian University.
The Aggies matched up first with Northeastern and neither team scored until the Riverhawks took three runs off starting pitcher Samantha Arledge in the third inning and then another in the fourth before Presjel Dai'Re relieved her. Northeastern scored two more runs to take a 6-0 lead after five and a half innings of play. In the bottom of the sixth, Emily Vasquez hit a double, advancing Kari Pitts to third, and then Brandi Heath walked to load the bases. Destyni Trayler grounded out to third, but it was enough to get Pitts safely home to get the Aggies on the scoreboard. The Riverhawks weren't through scoring, plating four more runs in the seventh and final inning to get the 10-1 win. Arledge was given the loss.
The Aggies tangled with the Abilene Christian University Wildcats in game two. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second when the Wildcats scored six runs off five hits. In the top of the third, Kaitlin McCool smacked a one-out double to send Ashly Duin home and then Britnie Weddle scored on a fielding error. The Wildcats came right back with two runs in the third and two more in the fourth for the 10-2 win. Starting pitcher A'lex Koonce took the loss, scattering nine hits and striking out one in three innings of work.
OPSU meets up again with Northeastern at 9 a.m. on Saturday followed by a game with Midwestern State at 11 p.m. Fans can find the live stats link on the softball schedule at www.opsu.edu.
