Hilltoppers Sweep Aggie Softball By Laura Nelson on 03/23/2013 Austin, Texas—Conference rival St. Edward's University swept the Oklahoma Panhandle State University softball team in a three-game series in Austin Mar. 22-23.
In the first game of the doubleheader on Friday, the Hilltoppers blanked the Aggies 4-0, holding the visitors to only four hits. Lilli Ward had two hits for three at-bats and Kaitlin McCool and Julie Cross were both 1-3. Losing pitcher Brittany Scruggs tossed a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out one.
The Hilltoppers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two and in the second, Emily Vasquez singled, stole second, advanced to third on a Kari Pitts single, and then scored the tying run on a throwing error by the shortstop. The score remained tied until St. Edward's scored two more runs in the fifth that ended the scoring for the game and gave them the 3-1 win. Samantha Arledge threw a complete game, giving up eight hits and striking out four.
Even though the Aggies put together nine hits in the final game, the Hilltoppers held them to only one run that came in the second inning. Junna'e Dai'Re hit a two-out single, and McCool backed that up with a single to send Dai'Re to second. Cross belted out a double that scored Dai'Re, but McCool was thrown out at home. The Hilltoppers completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory. Scruggs and Arledge both threw three innings each, with Scruggs taking the loss. McCool was a perfect 3-3 at the plate and Cross was three for four. Now 4-32 on the season, the Aggies are still looking for their first conference win.
The team takes some time off before traveling to Hays, Kan. Apr. 2 for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
