Volleyball Falls in Two Tough Conference Match-ups By Justine Gaskamp on 11/03/2013 Goodwell, Okla.—OPSU volleyball took on two Heartland Conference teams in their final home games of the 2013 season against McMurry University on Thursday, Oct. 31 and St. Edward's University on Friday, Nov. 1.
"Spirit" was in the air on Thursday night as the Aggies hosted a Halloween Spike-tacular and took on the 11-14 McMurry War Hawks. The War Hawks controlled the lead throughout all three sets and held the Aggies to -.135 hitting percentage. The Aggies brought down a team total of 19 kills and Terra Madden contributed one service ace. McMurry took all three sets (25-10, 25-10, 25-13) and advanced their conference record to 7-7.
Friday evening senior volleyball players Jessica DeBaun and Melissa Marshall were recognized prior to their final home match against St. Edward's University. The Aggies got off to a slow start in set one and were down 4-10 mid-way through when the Hilltoppers turned up the heat and brought in 9 unanswered points, gaining a lead that the Aggies were unable to catch. In sets two and three the Aggies turned up their own energy but fell short of victory. The Hilltoppers swept the Aggies in three sets 25-9, 25-15, 25-19 and moving to 9-5 in the Heartland Conference.
Skylar Mayeux finished the week with 24 assists and three service aces; Brittany Dubberstein tallied nine kills for 11 points and contributed two solo blocks. Libero duties were split between Kayla Schwartz (4 sets), Terra Madden (1 set), and Rebecca Simmons (1 set).
The Aggies will finish their season on the road beginning with a trip to Laredo, Texas on Nov. 8 where they will play Texas A&M International at 7 p.m.
