**For Immediate Release** OPSU’s Herring and Hamilton Earn All-America Honors By Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 07/23/2009 Goodwell, Okla. — Oklahoma Panhandle State University golfers Chris Herring and Rob Hamilton have been honored as All-America scholar athletes by Cleveland Golf/Srixon. It is the second consecutive season that Hamilton has earned the honor and it marks the first time that two OPSU golfers have earned the honor in the same year.

The award is based upon the true spirit of being a student athlete, and both Hamilton and Herring worked extremely hard on and off the golf course. In order to gain the All-America scholar athlete status, a golfer must satisfy requirements in several categories including being of good moral character; the participation in 70 percent of his team’s competitive rounds; have a stroke average of under 78.0 in NCAA Division II competition; and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale).

Both Herring and Hamilton graduated in May. Hamilton (Canberra, Australia) earned his degree in Physical Education with a minor in Management. Herring (Chandler, Oklahoma) was awarded his degree in Business Administration with a Management emphasis.

Roger McKinnon (OPSU graduate and Guymon businessman) completed his 11th year as the OPSU head golf coach this spring. Golfers on his teams have five times been named All-America scholar athletes.

OPSU sponsors a dozen intercollegiate sports including football, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s rodeo, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, softball and baseball. The school also sponsors club athletic activities in equestrian, and cheerleading.

To be successful as a college student-athlete and to earn a degree takes hard work and dedication, and the programs at OPSU have always been made up of fine young people, many who have went on positions of success and leadership, as well as many more who will continue to do so.
