**For Immediate Release** OPSU Baseball Begins Season with Two Game Split By Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 02/02/2010 San Antonio, Texas — The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team, under head coach Jason Kueffler, started the 2010 season with a bang in a 5-4 win over St. Mary’s University (a traditionally strong Heartland Conference team) on Monday in San Antonio. The temperature dropped into the 30s during the second game of the double header, but the St. Mary’s bats still warmed up quickly and the home team earned a 22-4 victory. The split starts the Aggie season record at 1-1.

Aggies 5, St. Mary’s 4

A four-run fifth inning was the difference maker in the opening game of the season for the OPSU Aggies against St. Mary’s in San Antonio. OPSU starting pitcher Robby Yaussy (the winning pitcher) did a nice job over six innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits while striking out five. Swenton Martina came on in relief and pitched the final inning to preserve the Aggie victory and earned a save.

Rob Holtz, Andy Klaus, and Josh Avery all drove in runs for the Aggies. OPSU center fielder Alex Salquist smacked two hits (one a double) in three trips to the plate. Right fielder Amir Daou also doubled for the Aggies.

St. Mary’s 22, Aggies 4

In the second game of the day, with drizzle and near freezing temperatures setting in, home team St. Mary’s pounded out 17 hits on their way to 22 runs.

The Aggies managed just three hits, two of them by outfielder Andy Klaus (including a double). Mike Senter knocked in the lone OPSU earned run, and pitcher Dalton Rice took the loss.

The Aggies will go against St. Mary’s again on Tuesday, be on the road again next week, and have their home opener on February 12 with a double header against another league contender – the University of Texas-Permian Basin.
