**For Immediate Release** Aggies Drop a Close One to St. Mary’s, 4-2 By Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 02/03/2010 San Antonio, Texas — The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team continued to compete in sub-40 degree temperatures in Texas and dropped a 4-2 decision to St. Mary’s here on Tuesday. The two teams split a double header on Monday.
The Aggies opened Tuesday’s game with two runs in the top of the very first inning, but St. Mary’s tied it with a pair of their own in their half of the third. With both teams pitching well and playing good defense, the score was tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth, when the home team scored twice more to make it 4-2. The Aggies were unable to bring anything home in their half of the ninth and final inning.
Swenton Martina worked hard as the Aggie starting pitcher and gave up just four hits and walked three over 7 1/3 innings. Martina had earned a save in Monday’s OPSU 5-4 win, but was charged with the loss in the Tuesday game.
Three of the five OPSU hits (all singles) came from first baseman Mike Senter, and the Aggie RBIs came from Josh Avery and Senter.
The Aggies (now 1-2 on the season) will be back in Texas this coming weekend (in Laredo) for double headers on both Saturday and Sunday against Texas A&M International.
