**For Immediate Release** Lady Aggies Softball Loses Twice to NM Highlands By Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 02/07/2010 Las Vegas, New Mexico — The Oklahoma Panhandle State Lady Aggie softball team opened their season on Saturday and dropped both ends of a double header (10-6 and 11-3) to the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands. The games were initially slated to be played at the OPSU softball complex, but were moved to Las Vegas due to the snow in Goodwell.

In the first game on Saturday, the Lady Aggies jumped out early and held a 6-5 lead through 5-1/2 innings, but the Cowgirls erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to a 10-6 win. The OPSU third inning featured a big three-run homer by pitcher Joni Stegman.

OPSU left fielder Kristen Curlin also homered (and drove in two runs), and center fielder Julie Cross had three hits in four trips to the plate. Third baseman Rachel Adaza drove in another OPSU run and catcher Katie Salazar had two hits in four tries. Cross also swiped two bases.

Stegman (the losing pitcher) went into the sixth inning, giving up nine hits and ten runs and struck out three batters before Kayla Pollard came on in relief.

In Saturday’s second game, the Cowgirls scored all their runs in the third and fourth innings and got their second win of the day, 11-3. Curlin (the pitcher) had two of OPSU’s five hits and drove in all three of their runs. OPSU’s Destyni Tate-Boggs was two of two at the plate, Cross stole a base and the Lady Aggies played errorless ball.

The game went just 4-1/2 innings based on the college softball run rule and Curlin was charged with the loss.

This coming weekend, the Lady Aggies will be in Weatherford, Oklahoma to play double headers on both Saturday and Sunday in the Southwestern Oklahoma State Kickoff Tournament.
