OPSU Student Launches Art Career
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 05-05-05

Torri Bates, Oklahoma Panhandle State University Senior Art major, hopes to make a living as a professional artist. She is well on her way after one of her original acrylic paintings was chosen by the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo marketing committee. Her special edition original, "Technicolor Cowboy," was selected to be used for all of the 2005 Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo advertising efforts. Ms. Bates will be on hand at each rodeo performance this weekend to sign the posters sold, and her art work will adorn T-shirts, drink can holders, and stadium cushions that will be also sold. Rodeo performances are scheduled for Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with the short round slated for Sunday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m.Inspired by the late Chris LeDoux, singer and former professional rodeo cowboy, Torri completed the art two years ago. "He has always been one of my favorite musicians," she said. The artwork was auctioned last night prior to the introduction of the steer ropers competing in the rodeo, and was purchased by a Guymon business. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in a few weeks, Torri, a native of Perryton, Texas, plans to continue to create her signature vividly-colored artwork, and hopes to get her work shown in galleries around the area. When developing her work, Torri said different things inspire her, and said this of her creativity: "I just want to get my emotions out there on canvas. It’s very exciting when it works, and frustrating when it doesn’t. Most of the time, I create a canvas and let the paint tell me what to do."

Part of the Fine Arts degree includes teaching students marketing methods and strategies, and OPSU is proud to see our art students like Ms. Bates sell professionally. To see more of Torri’s work, visit The Gallery: A Meeting Place, 1106 N. Main in Guymon, OK, where she has several pieces displayed.
