History Made at 2005 Commencement
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 06-06-05

Two Oklahoma Panhandle State University 2005 graduates made history at the recent commencement ceremony. Brigitte Drechsel-Gonzalez and Lidia Gonzalez Rodriguez are the first OPSU students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish.Drechsel-Gonzalez, a native of Germany, graduated from Guymon High School as a foreign exchange student. She moved back to Germany for one year, and then chose to return to the area to pursue a bachelor’s degree. After graduating from OPSU in May of 2004 with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration, she decided to get her second degree in Spanish. In addition to her native language, she speaks and writes fluent English and Spanish. She will soon begin work at the Japanese-based Guymon Extracts in the accounting department, and plans to add Japanese to her list of spoken languages.Gonzalez Rodriguez began her OPSU college career in teacher education, but switched to a Spanish degree when it became available. She lives in Sunray, Texas, and has worked as the bi-lingual assistant in Sunray Elementary for several years. Once she completes the remaining Spanish degree requirements this summer, she will serve Sunray Elementary school as the only bi-lingual certified teacher. A non-traditional student, Lidia has attended college while raising three children with husband Frank, and also enjoys time with three grandchildren.

OPSU added the Spanish degree program in 2004, and it provides students with comprehensive Spanish reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills as well as a background in literature and culture. This new program illustrates how OPSU continues to address the needs of the community it serves.
