Service Learning Benefits
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 04-22-05

Oklahoma Panhandle State University searches for ways to assist our community, and involving students in that experience multiplies the benefits. Students and faculty engaged in academic service learning, or simply service learning, identify community needs and incorporate academic courses with community service.Adam Jelinek, a senior Computer Information Systems (CIS) major from Sunray, Texas, recently completed a service learning project for the Oaks of Mamre in Guymon. The Oaks of Mamre serves the community as a mission with a focus on assisting people rejoin the work force. Detailed records are kept for each client, and up until today, all of the information was recorded by hand. While the Oakes of Mamre had a personal computer, it was not being utilized to its fullest extent. "I never could get anyone here to help me with the computer system," said Manager David Welch. A double-major OPSU graduate himself, he went on to say that someone suggested he contact Diane Murphey, OPSU’s CIS department chair. Murphey asked Jelinek to help design and implement a Microsoft Access database program for the Oaks of Mamre to keep track of clients as well as other information. He went to work, and with some design help from Murphey, spent three full days completing the project. The database program installed successfully, and the non-profit business can now maintain computerized files and easily generate reports after some training. "I appreciate the help from OPSU and the computer department," said Welch.

OPSU is proud to bridge the gap between a local business receiving needed help, and students learning while actively participating in the community.
