Plans for Centennial Underway
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 09-21-07
By Laura Hays

Goodwell, Okla. - Oklahoma Panhandle State University will celebrate its 100 years of providing high quality, low cost education with several ambitious projects. OPSU will turn 100 in 2009 and the anniversary celebration will begin with football homecoming in 2008 and culminate with the commencement ceremony in 2010. A steering committee met throughout the summer to brainstorm, and Chair of the Centennial Committee, Dr. Sara Jane Richter, presented their ideas at the initial meeting of the full group on Saturday.

The first order of business was approval of the Centennial logo created by Tito Aznar. With a few minor changes, it will be rendered in a digital format suitable for printing centennial memorabilia as well as stationery and other official documents. Dr. Richter provided the following list of proposed activities:

Videotaping interviews with OPSU Alumni to preserve that portion of OPSU history;
A series of “Picture Parties” to identify people and activities in old OPSU photographs and digitizing them;
Asking constituents to nominate “Legends of OPSU” and identify and record histories; of those who have made a significant impact on the institution. Anyone inside or outside of OPSU may be nominated;
Using the internet social networking tool My Space to disseminate and collect information about the Centennial;
A Centennial Quilt project;
Utilizing students in Dr. Brad Duren’s Oklahoma history class to research the history of all campus buildings;
Hosting a New Year’s Eve party on December 31, 2008;
Production of Centennial Flags and installation of flag poles and holders;
Commissioned artwork;
Commissioned music;
Campus improvements including production and installation of Centennial flags; tree planting; showcase of Centennial items in display cases around campus; renaming the auditorium in Hughes-Strong Hall “Centennial Theatre;” restoring the Plainsman statue located in the center of campus; renovation of Franklin Hall according to the National Register of Historic Places guidelines;
Development and printing of an OPSU “ABC” book to distribute to area public schools.

These are but a few of the many ideas the committee considered and subcommittees were formed to pursue the projects. Alumni Association President Troy Morris presented a possible budget for the entire Centennial plan. Identifying funding sources for the projects includes grants and sale of OPSU Centennial merchandise.

Thanks to the hard work of the Steering Committee, planning anniversary celebrations is well underway and the public will be invited to share in all of the fun!
