Aggie Extravaganza “Breeds” Success
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 06-02-05

Oklahoma Panhandle State University hosted the first Aggie Extravaganza Livestock Jackpot on May 29, 2005, and the competition drew 122 exhibitors from 5 states. The youth ranged in age from 3 to 19 years old and competed for over $2,000 in prize money.

Burt Williams of Spearman, Texas judged swine, lambs, and steers in three age divisions including the Senior division for ages 14 and over, the Intermediate division for ages 10-13, and the Junior division for those 9 and under.

Williams named a Hampshire gilt shown by Kaleigh Meador of Wildorado, TX Grand Champion Prospect hog. Reserve Champion Prospect hog went to L.T. Plunkett from Syracuse, Kansas with his crossbred barrow. Judge Williams described both hogs as being “very complete and fault -free.” He also stated that they beat one of the most competitive fields of prospect hogs he had ever seen.

In swine showmanship, Dodge Nichols of Maud, OK won the Senior division. L.T. Plunkett, of Syracuse, KS won the Intermediate division, and the Junior division winner was Cheyenne Hill of Farwell, TX.

Later in the day, Williams also judged the prospect lamb show which was won by Travis Winchester of Liberal, KS with his champion Suffolk lamb. He followed with Kaylonni Williams’ champion crossbred lamb for the title of Reserve Champion. Kaylonni, also from Liberal, KS, won the Senior showmanship contest as well. In the Intermediate sheep showmanship, Tori Smith of Dumas, TX won top honors and the Junior division was dominated by Kendall Lively of Freedom, OK.

The event finished off with the steer show in which the Boxwell Sisters from Perryton, TX made it a clean sweep. Brittany won champion honors with her Simmental steer and Megan took home reserve champion with her Shorthorn steer. Showmanship winners in the steer division were Shannon Sheldon of Dumas, TX for the Seniors, Megan Boxwell, Perryton, TX for the Intermediates, and Keifer Keylon from Goodwell, OK winning the Juniors.

According to Aaron Preator, OPSU Animal Science Instructor and Livestock Judging Coach, “The show was a great success and we look forward to making it an annual event. We want to thank everyone who supported and attended our show this year and have already begun making plans for the 2006 edition to be held Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.”
