The Plains Chapter of the American Red
Cross held its annual meeting Monday, August 29 at Hunny’s
BBQ in Guymon, and several Oklahoma Panhandle State University
faculty and staff members helped make it all happen.
Oklahoma Panhandle State University President Dave Bryant
served as keynote speaker for the event and spoke to the more
than 50 in attendance about the importance of local partnerships.
Dr. Bryant emphasized that teamwork between local organizations
like OPSU and the Red Cross benefit not only those involved,
but the community at large.
OPSU’s Scott Puryear served as
master of ceremonies, and Dr. Sara Jane Richter entertained
guests by playing the piano during the meal.
Bryant recognized OPSU faculty, staff and students for their
work with the Plains Chapter of the Red Cross. Jennifer Miller,
Russell Guthrie, and Jill Olson were recognized for their work
as certified CPR instructors. Several students were also recognized
including Michael Serna, Kristy Taylor, April Dickerson and
Amber Macias, all of whom serve as student disaster volunteers.
Student Jimmy Thompson was honored for his outstanding work
developing the Plains Chapter web page.
Lori Sanders, Chapter Executive Director
and OPSU graduate, presented Puryear with the chapter’s
Meritorious Service Award for his volunteerism and dedication.
He was also re-elected as Vice President of the Chapter.
Two faculty members join Puryear on the board including Ray
Schleidt as Treasurer, and Dr. Kathleen Turner as a new member
of the board.
While guests enjoyed a great meal and celebrated achievements,
the grim reality of Hurricane Katrina provided sobering thought.
Chapter President Harold Tyson reported current information
about the storm, and had already set up a local command center
to assist with disaster relief. Representatives of the Plains
Chapter of the American Red Cross and OPSU are discussing how
to provide immediate assistance for the victims of Hurricane
Katrina.
