-released by OPSU Campus Communications 06/06/06

Goodwell, Okla. -- In its 9th year, campers at Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s Broadway at Panhandle are busy rehearsing, building sets, and making lifelong memories. The week-long camp for students ages 12-18 offers the campers an opportunity to explore all aspects of theatre including everything from set design to preparing for the performance. Sponsored in part by a generous donation from the Oklahoma Arts Council, this year’s production is Once on This Island with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.

Once on This Island is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). Authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI, 421 W. 54th St., NY 10019 or visit for more information.

This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” sings and dances the story of Ti Moune, the black peasant girl who rescues, nurses and falls in love with Daniel, a mulatto from a wealthy family. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
