Cans Across America at OPSU

Goodwell, Okla. - Imagine a food drive that collects approximately 221,028 pounds of food in a single day and then imagine the number of people who could be fed with those donations.
Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s food service provider, Sodexho, is joining this year’s Cans Across America food drive that will be held Wednesday, November 7 in the Student Union cafeteria from 7:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Introduced in 2006, the drive involves college campuses across the nation and attempts to break the Guinness® World Record for the most nonperishable food collected in a 24 hour period. While last year’s collections fell just short of the current world record of 221,028.85 pounds, Sodexho at OPSU is set to make this year’s event bigger and better than last year.
This unique promotion combines a nationwide stop hunger initiative with a rewarding experience in which everyone can be proud to participate. Students, faculty, staff and area citizens are encouraged to help with this nationwide event.
Kenny Gipe, Sodexho’s General Manager on the OPSU campus, said “We are very excited to make this year’s Cans Across America event bigger and better than last year’s, and we are confident the record will soon belong to us!”
All of the canned goods donated at OPSU will stay in the area and will be distributed by Loaves and Fishes and local churches. Plan to join us in this effort by bringing nonperishable food items to the cafeteria in the Student Union Building this Wednesday, November 7 from 7:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. If you would like more information, contact OPSU’s campus dining services at 580-349-1006 or visit www.forstudentsbystudents.com.
