-released by OPSU Campus Communications 07-06-05
Oklahoma Panhandle State University will present a special dance performance for the public given by local youth on Friday, July 15 at 6:00 p.m. in Hughes-Strong Auditorium. The performance will showcase the talent and hard work of those who will participate in a weeklong Mexican traditions camp. Led by Alex Palencia, a professional dancer, dance instructor, director, and choreographer from Dallas, Texas, this is the second consecutive year that he has held a workshop on the OPSU campus.Campers will learn dances as well as the origin of each dance, and they will study Mexican culture, tradition and music. They will also create original Mexican arts and crafts as well as helping design and construct a backdrop for the performance. The camp is funded in part through the generosity of the Oklahoma Arts Council and a significant contribution from an anonymous charitable foundation in Guymon. Teri Mora is helping coordinate the camp again this year. OPSU President David Bryant said, “This workshop remains one of the most positive and enlightening learning activities OPSU offers. I hope we have a good crowd at the performance to appreciate the hard work and preparation of the students.”
Everyone is invited to attend the performance, and plan to stay after the approximately hour-long show to meet the dancers and enjoy traditional Mexican refreshments.
