Goodwell, Okla. — For the third consecutive year,
participants in Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s
Mexican Traditions Workshop will present a special dance
performance for the public this Friday, July 14 at 6:00
p.m. in Hughes-Strong Auditorium. The free exhibition will
showcase the talent and hard work of those attending the
camp this week.
Led by Alex and Mary Palencia, professional
dancers, dance instructors, directors, and choreographers
from Dallas, Texas, campers are learning dances as
well as the origin of each dance. They also study Mexican
culture, tradition and music and create original Mexican
arts and crafts plus help design and construct a backdrop
for the performance. The camp is funded in part through
the generosity of the Oklahoma Arts Council. OPSU Director
of Hispanic Student Services, Teri Mora, is helping
coordinate the camp again this year. She said, “I
am excited to offer this camp every year. We expanded the
area we serve this year with the addition of students from
Garden City, and plan to continue to increase participation.”
In addition to the Friday performance, “Salsa Night” will
be held Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom
on the OPSU campus. This event offers anyone interested
an opportunity to learn some dance steps, meet the campers,
and play games.
Everyone is invited to attend the events Thursday and
Friday nights and support the accomplished, hardworking
dancers.
