State University’s Rodeo Team holds
the Deke Latham Memorial Bronc Riding
School each May the weekend following
the Pioneer Day Celebration. This year’s
school begins Thursday and offers budding
bronc riders the opportunity to learn
skills from the professional rodeo cowboys
that reside right here in Texas County.
The proceeds of the school help fund
the rodeo team. Following the completion
of this year’s school, family,
friends, and anyone who enjoys saddle
bronc competition will have the opportunity
to watch more wild rides.
This Sunday, May 14 at 2:00 p.m. at
the Doc Gardner arena next to the OPSU
farm, the students will ride to demonstrate
what they have learned during the week.
In addition, up to twenty bronc riders
will vie for bragging rights and a share
of the entry fees plus $1,000 in added
money. The match ride is open to anyone
and the entry fee is $100.00. Ten contestants
have already entered and only twenty
spots are available.
A free calf scramble will be offered
for children 12 and under and prizes
will be awarded! A wild cow riding competition
will be also be held for a $10 entry
fee.
Admission to all of the fun this Sunday
is $5 per person. Children 12 and under
get in free. For more information about
the match bronc riding, the calf scramble
or the wild cow riding, call Robert Etbauer
at 580-349-2988.
Mike Garth will be cooking breakfast
and a barbecue lunch at the arena every
day from Thursday through Sunday. For
a small fee, anyone can enjoy a meal
and see what the students are learning
at the bronc riding school.
All extra proceeds
benefit the OPSU Rodeo Team. The Doc
Gardner Arena was completed with funds
raised by the team, so help support
OPSU rodeo by attending or participating
in this Sunday’s
fun!
