Goodwell, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s Equestrian Team was the Hi-Point Team out of the ten teams competing at the Lubbock Western show on March 3. Also, the team won third in their Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) region for the year, a notable achievement as this is the first year they have competed as a team. Even more amazing is the fact they were short one rider - OPSU used five compared to the six other teams had. Coach Channing Hawks said, “We were only running five scores against everyone else running six scores, so it’s particularly important to note that our team won enough points to beat two other teams.”

OPSU competes in Zone 7, Region 1. Some of the larger schools in the region include the University of Wyoming, New Mexico State, Texas Tech, West Texas A&M and Colorado State. Three of the women qualified for the Regional competition held in Lubbock last weekend including Hanna Slatten in Open Reining and Open Horsemanship; Lacy Jones in Intermediate II Horsemanship; and Shasta Kreis in Beginner Horsemanship. Slatten went on to qualify for the Western Semi-Finals in Open Reining. She and Coach Hawks will spend their spring break in Murfreesboro, Tenn. where Slatten hopes to advance to the national competition that will be held in Massachusetts this year.
