**For Immediate Release**
Equine Science Students to Market Projects
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 03-21-2006
Goodwell, Okla. - As part of the Equine Science program
at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, each student assumes
full responsibility for a young horse and begins training
it for eventual use on a ranch, in a feedyard, or perhaps
in the rodeo arena. The horses used as projects are either
owned by the individual student or have been enrolled in
the program by an area producer who would like the horse “educated” with
basic training and returned home ready for specialized
training.
The Festival of the Horse, held April 28-30, will include
an auction to sell some of these started horses, which
is welcome news for anyone who needs a good horse. Preview
of the stock for sale will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, April
29 with the auction set for 1 p.m. in the Milton England
Activity Center at the OPSU farm.
A Ranch Horse Versatility competition held the previous
day will feature the horses, giving potential buyers a
chance to look at each animal’s training, athleticism,
and cow sense. Having been trained for two semesters, the
horses are well-broken and have been used for roping and
working cattle. They have also conquered trail obstacles
and have performed reining maneuvers.
Several two-year-olds will also be offered for sale. Students
have been working with them since January, and all have
been handled gently. The stock will exhibit different levels
of proficiency, but all possess the foundation necessary
to continue training.
Curt Donnley of Woodward will preside as auctioneer, and
students and volunteers will work in the ring and as bid
spotters. Students will also handle the clerical part of
the sale. In addition, a limited number of outside horses
will be accepted on a consignment basis. If anyone would
like to consign a horse, please call Terryll Gloden at
OPSU at 580-349-1517, at home at 580-545-3658, or his cell
phone at 806-339-1284.
