Oklahoma Panhandle State University
President Dave Bryant and Vice
President of Outreach Wayne Manning
crowned the 2005 Fiesta King and
Queen scholarship recipients in
Guymon on September 18, 2005. Congratulations
to King Luis Alvarez and Queen
Jezebel DeLeGarza, who both won
full OPSU tuition waivers for the
2006-2007 school year.
Alvarez is the son of Bernardino
and Eugenia Alvarez, and DeLeGarza
is the daughter of Armando and
Maria DeLeGarza. Both are seniors
at Guymon High School and plan
to begin their college careers
at OPSU in the fall of 2006.
Criteria for the scholarships
include bilingual skills, academic
performance and writing ability,
extracurricular activities and
community involvement. Students
complete a short essay describing
what the long-term benefits to
the community might be if the student
is awarded the scholarship. Contestants
are also judged on personal interview
and communication skills.
In addition to the King and Queen
scholarships, candidates Linda
Dang, Michelle Martinez, Marivel
Medina, and Lilly Villa each received
a $300.00 tuition waiver.
OPSU remains committed to increasing
its Hispanic student population
to more accurately reflect the
demographics of the surrounding
communities.
