Goodwell, OK – Hispanic student leaders
from area high schools attended Oklahoma Panhandle State
University’s Hispanic Leadership Day on Wednesday,
Oct. 12. OPSU President Dave Bryant welcomed more than
100 students to the campus. Dr. Bryant encouraged the students
to think seriously about college, emphasizing that a college
education translates into a lifetime of earning power.
Students participated in many activities throughout the
day. In the morning, they attended sessions presented by
OPSU staff members. These sessions covered several topics,
including the benefits of a college education, admissions
and financial aid information, the academic programs offered
at OPSU and information to help the students become more
familiar with the OPSU campus.
The afternoon session brought the students together to
participate in activities designed to foster teamwork and
build leadership skills. The day ended with performances
from Alma Folklórica, a folkloric dance group from
Guymon High School, and OPSU’s newly formed mariachi
band, Mariachi OPSU.
Hispanic Leadership Day is one of the many events OPSU
sponsored for Hispanic Heritage Month. By inviting Hispanic
student leaders from area high schools to visit the campus
and learn more about the school, OPSU continues to work
toward its goal of increasing Hispanic enrollment to reflect
the demographics of the High Plains region. Many students
who attended Wednesday’s event showed interest in
attending OPSU in the future.
