Goodwell - Teri Mora, Oklahoma Panhandle
State University’s
Director of Hispanic Student Services, recently completed
a Master’s of Education in Bilingual Education and
Teaching English as a Second Language from the University
of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
Mora was hired in August of this
year to help OPSU with its mission to augment the student
population to more accurately reflect the demographics
of the region it serves. The Hispanic population continues
to expand, and Mora’s years
of work with the Hispanic students in Guymon Public Schools
uniquely qualifies her to address the needs of this flourishing
culture.
Mora has implemented a number of programs including celebration
of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sep. 15-Oct. 15), Hispanic
Student Leadership Day plus a week-long summer camp sponsored
by OPSU for students to discover the many resources available
to them for post-secondary education. OPSU is currently
an associate member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges
and Universities (HACU) and Mora plans to increase Hispanic
enrollment in order to become a full member of HACU as
an Hispanic Serving Institution.
The new degree will help her when she visits teachers
in area schools to confer about how to close the achievement
gap between Hispanic and Anglo students. She may also begin
teaching English as a Second Language methods classes to
OPSU education majors.
OPSU remains committed to providing
all of our students with the highest quality education
available. Mora’s
vision and commitment will ensure the Hispanic population
will have the opportunity to take advantage of all OPSU
has to offer.
