Goodwell, Okla. - Athletic officials at
Oklahoma Panhandle State University recently discovered
and self-reported National Collegiate Athletics Association
(NCAA) violations within the softball program as the
result of an investigation into the welfare of student
athletes. Tony Stigliano, Heartland Conference Commissioner,
commended OPSU. “OPSU has
done a great job since joining the Heartland Conference
in the areas of compliance, sportsmanship, being competitive
and being a solid member of the conference. We appreciate
their hard work and support.”
All acts of noncompliance were reported immediately upon
discovery by university officials and reflect the diligence
and integrity of the current athletic administration. The
softball coach involved is no longer employed by OPSU.
An internal investigation revealed
three violations dating back to 2001. These infractions
occurred during the previous university and athletic
administrations and were items that were not uncovered
during the previous investigation. Two more recent violations
were discovered at the same time. OPSU officials are
pleased that the Division II Committee on Infractions
adopted the school’s self-imposed
penalties.
OPSU’s Athletic Director Jerry Olson said, “Even
though the current situation occurred during a prior administration,
Dr. Bryant’s guidance has led the athletic administration
to conform to a superior standard. We hold ourselves to
a high level of compliance and appreciate his leadership.”
Following an NCAA investigation four years ago, strict
institutional control was established. Current coaches
and athletics administrators remain vigilant and the athletic
department administration continues to develop an exemplary
NCAA Division II athletic program.
