Goodwell, Okla. — The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is held every year to commemorate those who died in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing on April 19, 1995. Each of the 168 victims is remembered each year during with race with individual banners that line the marathon course. Promoters of the marathon emphasize that the event serves to remind others to celebrate life and realize how precious each moment is.
Approximately 14,000 people participated in this year’s running events which include a full marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1 miles), a marathon relay, a 5K memorial walk, a children’s marathon as well as a wheelchair “run.” Several runners affiliated with Oklahoma Panhandle State University competed in this year’s 7th annual half marathon. Current students and OPSU Cross Country runners Paul Blakely of Borger, Texas, Jeff Flanagan of Texhoma, Okla., and Stephen Clark, a citizen of the United Kingdom, all ran the half-marathon and were also joined by Jana Robinson, a 2001 OPSU animal science graduate. In addition, Nancy Nelson, an OPSU recruiter ran the half marathon and marked her fourth year as a Run to Remember participant. The first two years she ran the full marathon and the past two years competed in the half marathon. Following are results from the OPSU runners:
