The Oklahoma
Panhandle State University High School and Community
Relations office has been making many recruiting trips
to area high schools and junior colleges. On Friday,
Oct. 7, ten faculty members and five students joined
campus recruiter Christy LaCross on a trip to Boise City
high school.
The recruiters addressed about 145
students from grades 9-12. Students listened to a presentation
discussing the benefits and importance of a college education
in today’s
job market. They also discussed the cost of college and
the different ways that OPSU works with students to keep
those costs as low as possible, emphasizing that OPSU offers
the lowest priced four-year education in Oklahoma. Faculty
members from each University School spoke about the different
programs and academic opportunities offered at OPSU.
This trip is an important step toward
our goal of increasing the number of Hispanic students
enrolled at OPSU. Teri Mora, Director of Hispanic Student
Services, spoke to the Boise City students about the
school’s efforts to
increase the Hispanic enrollment to reflect the demographics
of the area. She also talked to them about OHLAP and legislation
affecting undocumented students. Boise City schools have
a large number of Hispanic students, and a majority of
the 2006 senior class is Hispanic. All of the Hispanic
seniors attended the High School Hispanic Leadership Day
hosted by OPSU on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
After the general presentation, individual students stayed
to talk with the faculty and OPSU students about their
specific areas of interest. Several students showed genuine
interest in choosing OPSU. The OPSU group also met one-on-one
with the Boise City teachers, administrators and counselor
to discuss OPSU programs and the benefits that our school
offers students. For the past 100 years, OPSU has been
providing a high-quality education to the residents of
the High Plains, and we look forward to continuing the
tradition.
