Goodwell, Okla. — Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s Commencement, held May 19 this year, is a time of pride and honor. One of the most prestigious awards presented each year ceremony is the J.R.P. Sewell Award, and this year’s recipient is Allen Roberts of Hooker, Oklahoma.
The award was established in 1949 in the memory of civic pioneer J.R.P. Sewell and honors a graduating senior for combined accomplishments in academics, leadership and citizenship. Only graduating seniors with higher than a 3.0 cumulative grade point average are eligible for the honor, and only one is chosen each year.
Roberts, a 2003 graduate of Hooker High School, finished work on his degree at OPSU last December, earning majors in Business Administration and Computer Information Services. He is now working for Panhandle Telephone as an Information Technology Specialist.
Selected from an extremely strong field of graduating seniors, Roberts led by example in the classroom and was on either the President’s or the Dean’s Honor Role for the majority of his academic career. He is also a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society.
Roberts is also well liked by his fellow students and instructors. Diane Murphey, one of his teachers, said he was a pleasure to have in class. Murphey, also the Dean of OPSU’s School of Business, added “Allen competed with the OPSU Programming team and was active in the AITP club activities. I am proud to have him as a graduate of the Computer Information Systems program at OPSU.”
Allen Roberts will continue on the path of success that he began in the Hooker schools and continued with his outstanding work at Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
