OPSU Welcomes New Liberal Arts Faculty
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 06-29-05

At the June meeting of the Board of Regents for the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical Colleges, two new faculty appointments were approved. Oklahoma Panhandle State University welcomes Dr. Patrick Maille as Assistant Professor of History, and Jason Berg as Instructor of Music and Director of Bands.

Dr. Maille, an avid historian and self-proclaimed “news junkie,” received his Ph.D. from Texas Tech. He studied European history with particular emphasis in Late Ancient, Medieval, and Early Modern Europe. Other interests include the history of early Christianity, religious conversion, and magic. He enjoys music and movies and maintains an interest in national politics. A native of Schenectady, New York, he balances his passion for the New England Patriots with his roles of father, husband, scholar, and teacher.

Dr. Maille will be on campus teaching a summer course which begins July 5th. History 2213 counts for general education credit in these three places: liberal arts, social science, and humanities. The class meets through August 3, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. in Hamilton #207. Enroll now and be first to meet Dr. Maille and welcome him to campus.

OPSU also welcomes Jason Berg, who brings with him a wealth of experience as a performer, composer, and educator. He has performed with a number of distinguished since his musical career began while still in high school in his native Hartford, Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Music Degree and his Master’s from Rutgers University. Since 2002, Mr. Berg has served in the Army, most recently in Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a trumpet instrumentalist performing with the Concert Band, Marching Band, Brass Ensemble and Jazz Combo.

Berg has also written extensively for small jazz ensembles, latin jazz ensembles, and big bands. Some of his musical selections are available on compact disc, and he has won a number of musical awards as well as military honors. When asked about his plans for the OPSU music department, he said, “I plan for the band to play a major role in the surrounding community as musical ambassadors. In addition, I am committed to continuing the proud tradition of teacher training that OPSU is known for, fostering music educators who will contribute to and enrich the cultural fabric of the Panhandle and beyond.”

In other personnel news, the A&M Board approved Dr. Wayne Manning as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Outreach. Previously, he had filled the VPAA spot on an interim basis.

Please join OPSU in welcoming Dr. Maille and Mr. Berg to our community!
