Goodwell, Okla. - Soccer fever has infected Oklahoma Panhandle State University and the sport is set to be organized as a club activity that will begin play next spring. The popularity of the game in the U.S. has risen in recent years and several amateur clubs play regularly in the Texas County area. OPSU’s Director of Hispanic Services, Teri Mora, said, “I have had a number of international and Hispanic students express an interest in the sport. We are in the process of organizing a soccer club and determining the level of interest. I have had over 25 students ready to commit to playing.”
Several area junior colleges and four year institutions have club soccer teams and the group has contacted junior colleges in Kansas such as Dodge City Community College, Garden City Community College and Hutchinson Community College as well as Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa to see about scheduling games with their club soccer teams. Mora and prospective players have been busy considering uniforms, planning a place to play and practice on campus, and the feasibility of fielding a men’s and a women’s team. For more information on the plans, telephone Mora at 580-349-1538.
