Goodwell, Okla. — One of the most successful retail operations in the U.S., Wal-Mart opened a new 156,000 square-foot Supercenter on August 3. No longer will residents drive 50 miles or more to another state in order to shop at a Wal-Mart Supercenter. The highly successful retail operation opened a new 156,000 square-foot facility, and store associates, their families, and local business people helped celebrate the new store at a reception on July 31.
Wal-Mart officials used the reception to honor eight area organizations with generous donations. Oklahoma Panhandle State University received a $30,000 check for the new Science and Agriculture building currently under construction on the campus. The contribution gives Wal-Mart naming rights to one of the areas within the building, and the new Sam & Helen Walton Conference Room will provide a meeting area on the second floor of the structure. The donation itself will help defray the cost of specialized laboratory equipment, and students, faculty, staff, and members of the public who use the room will appreciate the Walton family and Wal-Mart stores for their contribution to education.
Other entities receiving donations included $1,000 each to the Panhandle Regional Economic Development Corporation, the Guymon Rotary Club, the Guymon High School Chapter of Future Farmers of America, Oaks of Mamre, Northwest Domestic Crisis Center, the City of Guymon, and Kids Inc. Store Manager Rick Scott said, “We’re happy to be in a position to provide funds to worthy entities in our community. The other 10 stores in Market 148 each donated $1,000 for these efforts, and the rest of it was donated by the Guymon store.”
In addition to the donation, the Guymon Wal-Mart provides jobs for many OPSU college students, allowing them to work around their class and study schedules, and now also offers students one-stop, low cost shopping. Congratulations to everyone affiliated with the Supercenter and OPSU looks forward to continuing a great relationship.
