-released by OPSU Campus Communications 04-12-05

The Oklahoma Panhandle State University rodeo team must seem unbeatable to their rivals this spring. After five rodeos, the men’s and women’s teams have each brought home four championship trophies. The fourth trophies were added this weekend after the Southwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo in Weatherford. Not only did the men’s and women’s team both bring home first place trophies, three students also won both All-Around titles. Stacey Watland won the women’s All-Around title, and Colin Stalley and Buster Holland share the men’s All-Around title.Watland smoked the competition in the goat tying, taking first in the long go, first in the average, and splitting first and second in the short go. In that same event, Chancy Etbauer added team points by splitting fourth and fifth in the average, and Crystal Sall made the short round. In breakaway roping, Watland and teammate Erica Brown lead the event by splitting second and third in the long go. Brown went on to win the short go as well as the average, and Watland took third in the short go and placed second in the average. On the men’s side, Holland took first in the steer wrestling long go and followed that with a second place win in the short go and won the average, while David Moore and Michael Holyan took second and fourth respectively in the long go.In the saddle bronc, Colin Stalley won first in the long round and the average and second in the short go. Dusty Hauser took second in the long go, and fourth in the average. Logan Hodson also rode in the short round of the saddle bronc event.Jeremiah Farrell took second in the long go of the bull riding and third in the average while teammate Cal Peterson placed third in the long go and fourth in the average. Trell Etbauer placed third in the long and short rounds of the calf roping, and split second and third in the average. In other results, Travis Sharp split fourth and fifth in the bareback riding, and Hauser and Preston Billadeau of Northwestern Oklahoma State came in fifth in the short go and fifth in the average in team roping.

Coach Craig Latham said, "The women’s team won Southwestern by 120 points over the second place team, and now they sit only 90 points from first place in the Central Plains Region. With two rodeos left this spring, we plan to keep working hard so we can take as many students as possible to the College National Finals in June." The teams have a week off before competing at Fort Hays State in Hays, Kansas April 22-24. The regular season wraps up at Southeastern Oklahoma State University April 28-30, and CNFR qualifiers will be announced following the conclusion of that rodeo.
