Men Bring Home Win #5
-released by OPSU Campus Communications 04-25-05

The Oklahoma Panhandle State University rodeo team took their winning tradition to Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas this past weekend. The men’s team added their fifth first place trophy out of this spring’s six rodeos. With only one rodeo left to go, anticipation is running high to see who from the OPSU team will compete in the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming this June. The men’s team won CNFR last year, and Coach Craig Latham expects a good showing this year.At Fort Hays, OPSU reigned over the saddle bronc riding by taking seven of the top ten spots in the first round, and the top five spots in both the short go and the average. Trell Etbauer led the pack with a second place ride in the long go, first in the short go and the average. Right behind him, Colin Stalley placed third in the long go, second in the short go, and second in the average. Matt Hebbert split sixth, seventh and eighth in the long go, split third and fourth in the short go, and ended up third in the average. Dusty Hausuer won fifth in the long and short rounds and took fourth in the average. Jordan Furnish took fourth in the long go, sixth in the short and won fifth in the average. Winston Kusler and Cal Peterson also made the short round of the saddle bronc riding.Only two riders covered their bulls in the short round of that event, and both of those were OPSU cowboys. After a third place ride in the long round, Cal Peterson came back to take first in the short go and first in the average. Teammate Winston Kusler took second in the short go and placed second in the average. Carl Wisely also made the short round. In the bareback riding, Logan Hodson placed second in the long round, split second, third and fourth in the short go, and won second in the average. Travis Sharp split seventh and eighth in the first round, split second, third and fourth in the short go, and won fifth in the average.Levi Swafford and Eli Eastman placed 3rd in the long go of the team roping, 4th in the short go and took 4th in the average. On the women’s side, Kema Scheer made the short go of the breakaway roping, and Stacey Watland made the short go of the goat tying.

Following this weekend’s final Central Plains Region rodeo at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, total points will be tallied to determine CNFR qualifiers. We anticipate announcing OPSU’s qualifying student athletes one week from today!
