Goodwell, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team opened the season over the weekend with a three game set against Colorado Christian University. The Aggies lost the first game, on Friday, 7-1. On Saturday, CCU won the first game of a double header (12-5) but the Aggies bounced back in the second game with a 12-6 victory.
Over the three games, OPSU center fielder Mike Roche played well in the field and had five hits in ten total trips to the plate. Two of Roche’s hits were doubles and another a triple, and the senior drove in six runs in the three games.
In Saturday’s victory, Aggie freshman pitcher Jason Staudt pitched a nine inning complete game for the win and scattered seven hits. In that same game, Roche had four hits, Chris Sanchez and Mike Jameson each had three hits, while Chad Thies, Matthew O’Neill, andK.D. Bressler each had two. The Aggie offensive attack featured 17 hits, with Roche driving in four runs, Jameson driving in three, and Clint Stottlemyre knocking in two.
On both Friday and Saturday, Bressler (a senior from Guymon) made several excellent catches in right field despite battling windy conditions.
Heartland Conference play opens next weekend and the Aggies (1-2 on the season) will be in San Antonio for double headers on both Friday and Saturday against the always excellent St. Mary’s University.
