Moss and Furgeson, Two Fine OPSU Guards
by Scott Puryear of Aggie Sports on 01-25-06
Goodwell, OK - The Oklahoma Panhandle
State University men’s
and women’s basketball teams had a combined record of
5-1 last week, thanks in large measure to the play of two outstanding
guards . . . Eddie Moss and Sarah Furgeson.
Moss, a 6’0 senior, averaged 17.7 points over three
games for the Aggies and was a one man wrecking crew in Saturday’s
victory over Western New Mexico. In that contest, Moss scored
26 points (including 5-9 from three point range), hit all seven
of his free throw chances, hauled down six rebounds and had
nine steals. With the Aggies fighting to stay in the game,
the Chicagoan drilled two NBA-range three point shots within
24 seconds to force overtime. OPSU then pulled out the victory,
82-81.
For his outstanding performance, Moss
has been honored as the Heartland Conference Men’s
Player of the Week.
It is rare for a freshman to display true on-court leadership,
but Furgeson, a Sudan, Texas native, does exactly that for
the Lady Aggies. She has been a sure handed player all season
and seems to gain more confidence with each game.
In last Friday’s 85-75 win over Western New Mexico,
Furgeson was credited with 14 assists. That total equaled a
14 year-old OPSU school record and set an all-time Heartland
Conference record. Her assist total in that game was only one
short of this year’s NCAA Division II national high.
Furgeson and her teammates, as well as
Moss and the rest of the Aggies, will be in action on Wednesday
night against the University of the Incarnate Word on Wednesday
and on Friday against St. Mary’s. On both nights, the women’s
game will be at 6:00 and the men will tip-off at 8:00.
