Goodwell, Okla. - Though cold outside, it was warm enough in the Oklahoma Panhandle State gym on Friday night as the Aggies combined a solid team effort with some hot shooting to forge an 89-62 win over Hillsdale Baptist. OPSU coach Jerry Olson used all 15 of his players in the contest, with nine of them playing ten minutes or more and five of them scoring in double figures.
The first half of the contest was close for a while and the score was knotted at 16-16 seven minutes into the game. However, the Aggies methodically went to work on a 15-0 run that featured solid teamwork, ball handling, and defense which eventually gave them a 44-32 lead at the intermission.
The second half continued to showcase the OPSU athleticism and they hit 54% of their shots from the field and pulled away for the 27-point victory, their fourth win in five games as they raised their season record to 5-3.
Scott Hilton led the way for the Aggies with 16 points (in just eighteen minutes on the court) and dependable senior LaChawn Anderson chipped in 12 points. Other Aggies scoring in double figures were Fred Durr and Will Stephenson (each with 11) and Mark Bultman with ten.
With his game high ten rebounds, Stephenson chalked up a “Double–Double.” The 6’6 forward also had two blocks and a pair of steals.
The 6’7 Durr had four rebounds, four assists and three steals to go with his point total and some fine defensive play on the inside. OPSU’s quick guard, Chuck Salisbury, came up with three assists and three steals while 6’4 forward Luke Ogden fought his way to six points, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
Hillsdale’s excellent 6’4 Jimmy Gibbs led all scorers with 26 points.
It was a good time in the OPSU gym, a good team effort that resulted in an Aggie win, and good preparation for the run at the Heartland Conference title that Olson and the Aggies expect to make starting in January.
