Goodwell, Okla. - In a rugged men’s basketball game on Saturday night, the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State University went at it with the University of the Incarnate Word. It was a good Heartland Conference contest that was not decided until the final minute and UIW picked up a 76-69 win.
UIW jumped out to a fast 9-2 lead within the first five minutes of the game, but a determined Aggie squad fought back aided by a strong full court press. OPSU’s Will Stephenson dropped in a bucket to put the Aggies ahead 10-9 with 13 minutes left in the opening half.
With each team playing well at both ends of the court, Aggie LaChawn Anderson’s three-point play put his team ahead, 15-14, with just over nine minutes before halftime. With the Aggies playing an effective zone defense, UIW found some rough going and had to earn every point as they went on a nice run to take a 33-27 lead to the halftime break.
The second half was just as thrilling as the first and UIW was ahead by only two points, 38-36, with four minutes gone, but with the Aggies keeping up the intense defensive pressure. Both teams continued to work hard and with seven minutes remaining in the game, UIW managed to pull ahead 61-56. However, with 4:20 left, OPSU’s Fred Durr nailed a three-point bomb to cut the UIW lead to two points, at 67-65.
The final minutes of the game were very physical but UIW finished well and earned the 76-69 victory.
Quick junior guard E. J. Ollison led OPSU in scoring with 18 points. Three more Aggies also scored in double figures – Anderson had 16, Stephenson had 13, and Durr netted 11. Durr and Anderson each had a pair of steals while Stephenson and Durr led the Aggies in rebounding with six.
The Aggies will be in Wichita Falls, Texas on Monday night for a non-conference battle with Midwestern State, and then resume Heartland Conference play with a Friday night battle with Montana-State-Billings.
