OPSU Men Lose Another Close One, 62-58
by Scott Puryear of Aggie Sports on 1/12/06
Goodwell, OK- The Oklahoma Panhandle
State men’s basketball
team traveled to Austin, Texas for a Wednesday night game with
St. Edward’s University. The Aggies worked very hard
for victory, but St. Edward’s pulled out a 62-58 win
in the final minute.
OPSU had won only one game on the season
going in, compared to ten for a good St. Edward’s team, but the Aggies were
not one bit intimidated and led by as much as seven points
in the opening half. However, as the clock wound down in the
first period, the Aggies had turnover problems, and the score
stood 31-30 at the break with St. Edward’s holding the
advantage.
In the second half, both teams came out
fast. The Aggies stayed step for step with their opponents,
and St. Edward’s
was up 39-38 with just over 15 minutes to play in the game.
With just under 12 minutes to play, the score was knotted at
42 points each, and the Aggies were fighting hard on both ends
of the court.
With 7:32 left, the score was still tied,
this time at 49-49. St. Edward’s went on a 6-0 run to take a 55-49 advantage.
The Aggies came back rapidly, and the score stood 57-56 for
St. Edward’s near the three-minute mark.
The Aggies were patient, and a William
Preston bucket put OPSU ahead 58-57 with 1:30 left to play,
but with 40 seconds to go, St. Edward’s seized the
lead at 59-58.
St. Edward’s closed things out from the free throw line
and gained the victory, 62-58. It was the second straight hard
luck loss for OPSU, after losing 90-89 at Montana-Billings
last Saturday. The Aggies are now 1-14 on the season, and St.
Edward’s is 11-3.
Preston led the Aggies with 16 points and seven rebounds,
and Eddie Moss scored 14. Aaron Harrison chipped in ten points
to the OPSU cause, and Nick Malinowski added nine.
The Aggies will be back on their home court on Saturday for
a non-conference game with Johnson and Wales University. Tip-off
will be at 5:00 PM.
