Goodwell, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Panhandle State men’s basketball team was in San Antonio for a key Heartland Conference match-up against St. Mary’s on Saturday night. The game was a relatively close one for nearly the entire first half, but St. Mary’s turned up the heat on both ends of the court and won the contest 80-56.
Late in the opening half, the game was a tight one, with St. Mary’s leading by just three points (28-25). However, the Rattlers put on a 7-0 run to close the first half scoring at 35-25.
The second half began the way the first half ended and the Rattlers came out fast on the offensive end and very tough on the defensive end. When it was over, the Rattlers owned an 80-56 victory.
Will Stephenson led the Aggies with a dozen points, LaChawn Anderson added nine, and both Fred Durr and Marques Loftis put in seven points. Luke Ogden was high for OPSU in rebounds with seven, while Loftis and Stephenson each had five.
A disappointed OPSU head coach, Jerry Olson, said the Rattlers pushed the Aggies around with some very tough defense. The veteran coach pulled no punches when he said, “At times, they looked like men and we looked like little boys.”
There will be a match-up of the same two teams in Goodwell in two weeks and Olson added that the Aggies are going to have to get tougher if they are going to be successful in the rematch.
With their victory, St. Mary’s raised their season record to 11-8 (4-1 in the league). The Aggies are now 8-11 on the season and 1-4 in the conference.
The Aggies are scheduled for just one game in the coming week, an away contest against the University of Texas – Permian Basin. The OPSU players will have some serious payback on their minds for that one as UT-PB beat the Aggies 64-61 in Goodwell on January 24 by virtue of a last second shot.
