Goodwell, Okla. - In their opening game of the season, the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies came out fast and hammered New Mexico Highlands 89-64 in Las Vegas on Thursday night. Forward Fred Durr nailed a jumper to put the Aggies up 2-0, and they never looked back, controlling the game from start to finish.
OPSU had earlier played a pair of tune-up exhibitions against Oklahoma State and North Texas State.
Head coach Jerry Olson had the Aggies prepared, in shape and ready to roll – and their performance proved it. The Aggies were up 50-32 at the halftime break and increased the lead to as many as 30 points in the second half.
Five Aggies scored in double numbers, led by Will Stephenson, a 6’6 senior, who led all scorers with 22 points (and also pulled down a game high nine rebounds). Durr, another dependable senior, scored 18, while Basil Laslie and Luke Ogden scored 14 and 13, respectively. Last year’s leading scorer, LaChawn Anderson, scored ten points.
Defense was also a big factor in the OPSU victory, and as a team they came up with 14 steals, with Ogden and Durr each getting four swipes. Guard Chuck Salisbury came up with three steals to go with six points, six assists, and four rebounds.
Olson liked what he saw from his team, especially their shot selection and ball control. He was also especially complimentary of Durr’s defense and the overall work of Stephenson.
The Aggies’ next action will be on November 23 on the road against the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs.
