Goodwell, Okla. — If one wanted an exciting time, it was definitely in San Angelo, Texas on Monday night. In a heart stopping men’s basketball game, Angelo State withstood a courageous Oklahoma Panhandle State rally and picked up a 70-67 victory.
The game was a wild back and forth affair with Angelo State taking an early first half lead, but the Aggies responded with an outstanding 15-4 run and played a tenacious zone defense. The first half ended with the home team ahead 39-33.
Character was the defining word for OPSU in the second half. Angelo State, a tough and talented squad representing the Lone Star Conference, tried to shake the Aggies, but the visitors refused to go quietly. Though the young men from OPSU trailed by 12 points with 8:26 to play, they did not give up and put on a spectacular run to tie the game at 63-63 with 2:30 left to play. It was virtually anyone’s game until the final moments, but Angelo State prevailed with a three point win.
LaChawn Anderson led the Aggies in scoring with 18 points and teammate Fred Durr knocked down a “double-double” with 16 points and 11 rebounds. OPSU’s Will Stephenson added nine points while Luke Ogden and E. J. Ollison each scored eight. Ogden, a former Perryton (Texas) prep, also pulled down seven rebounds.
Angelo State evened their record at 2-2 and OPSU is now 1-4. The Aggies will be on campus for a couple of days tending to business in classes before heading west to Gunnison, Colorado to play in the Comfort Inn Classic. In the first round, on Friday, they will face Western State and on Saturday the will go against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
