Goodwell, Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State men’s basketball team did exactly what they set out to do on Wednesday night and came up with a big 79-71 win against Eastern New Mexico in Portales. The Aggie trio of Fred Durr, Will Stephenson and Basil Laslie scored 22 points each and a tenacious OPSU defense forced 32 turnovers.
The Aggies led by just two points (29-27) at the halftime break but fought their way to a lead of as much as 18 points in the second half.
Aggie head coach Jerry Olson was not pleased with the OPSU rebounding, but overall he was very upbeat about beating a team from the rugged Lone Star Conference on the road.
Stephenson had eight rebounds and Laslie pulled down seven. Luke Ogden and Durr had four steals, while LaChawn Anderson had four assists to go with his nine points.
The Aggies held a 23-7 advantage in free throws made and came up with 17 steals, but ENMU had the edge in rebounds, 52-31.
OPSU also played without the services of point guard Chuck Salisbury, who was ill. The Aggies (now 2-2) will have their home opener next Monday night against Cameron University with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m.
