Lady Aggies Fall in Overtime to St. Edward’s
by Scott Puryear of Aggie Sports on 1/12/06
Goodwell, OK- It was exciting
women's college basketball as the Lady Aggies of Oklahoma
Panhandle State fought hard against St. Edward’s but
lost 70-60 in overtime on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas.
It was a wild game from start to finish.
OPSU trailed by only four points (32-28) at the half, but
raged back to take a brief second period lead. St. Edward’s also played well, and
the score was tied 56-56 at the end of regulation thanks to
a bucket by OPSU’s April Gahagan just before the buzzer.
There was a questionable technical foul
called on OPSU head coach Jerry Olson that gave St. Edward’s
a momentum swing down the stretch in the second half.
St. Edward’s controlled the overtime tip-off and scored
the first five points of the extra period to take a 61-56 advantage.
The Lady Aggies fought back valiantly, refusing to give up,
and both teams played with intensity despite being very tired.
However, St. Edward’s had the hot hand and outscored
the Lady Aggies by ten in the overtime period for their 70-60
victory.
With the loss, the Lady Aggies dropped
to 6-10 on the season and 1-2 in the Heartland Conference.
St. Edward’s raised
their record to 4-9 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
Nina Kuleff led the Lady Aggies with
17 points, and teammate Taneisha Rogers drilled in 16 including
four three pointers. OPSU’s fine freshman, Sarah Furgeson,
showed great hustle the entire game and finished with six
points and six rebounds. Diana Garduno scored six points,
as did Gahagan, who led the team with nine rebounds.
Olson was disappointed in the loss, but
not in his team. “I
thought we played well enough to win,” the veteran coach
said.
The Lady Aggies get a well deserved week off before heading
to Jefferson City, Missouri to match up with Lincoln University
on January 18.
