Goodwell , Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State women's basketball team was in Odessa on Thursday night to play the University of Texas-Permian Basin. It was a tight first half and OPSU went to the halftime break ahead 40-33. A seven point advantage was something the Lady Aggies were not satisfied with and they hammered away with a 49-point second half for a strong 89-67 victory.
OPSU's Sedra Watkins had a very big night with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Her teammate, Sara Polson, continues to have a hot hand as she buried five three-point rockets in nine attempts and finished with 21 points.
Lady Aggie Nina Kuleff continues with the form that made her an all-conference player last season. In Thursday night's victory, the 6'0” senior popped in 18 points in heavy traffic, hauled down ten rebounds and had three key steals. Like last season, when Kuleff is on a roll, the “double-doubles” add up quickly.
The Lady Aggies were dominant under the boards and earned 54 rebounds compared to the 33 from UTPB.
Post-game, OPSU coach Jerry Olson was especially pleased that the Lady Aggies pulled down 24 offensive rebounds. Olson added that several of his players stepped up, especially in the second half, and said his bench players also made a very big contribution.
OPSU is now 5-13 on the season.
As the Lady Aggies left an unusually snowy Odessa , they could relax a little on the 340-mile bus ride savoring their third win in the last four games, and looking forward to a week off before a home stand against Texas A&M International next Thursday and St. Edward's two days later.
