Goodwell, Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State women’s basketball team played their second road game in as many nights on Monday and lost to Newman University 60-52 in Wichita, Kansas.
The Jets from Newman and the Lady Aggies are Heartland Conference rivals.
The Lady Aggies opened the game with a 5-0 run, but by the halftime break Newman led by four points at 26-22.
OPSU opened the second half strongly and a Sarah Polson three point rocket put them ahead 34-31 with 14:30 to play in the game.
The game was very competitive and Newman seized the lead back at 46-45 with 6:34 left to play. Though it remained close up until the final buzzer, Newman held on for the 60-52 win.
The Lady Aggies were led by Megan Hamilton’s 17 points while Jasmine Williams added 14 and eight rebounds. Ro Wilson came up with three steals to go with her seven points and Connie Maas had two swipes. Polson scored six.
Post game, OPSU coach Brad Vanden Boogaard called the game the Lady Aggies’ most disappointing defeat of the season. He took the responsibility for the loss himself and said the OPSU shooting performance was poor, and the squad did not take good care of the ball.
The loss put the Lady Aggie season record at 7-8 and 2-2 in the conference. Newman improved their season record to 4-13 (2-2).
The Lady Aggies will be back on their home court on Thursday as the front half of a men’s and women’s double header against UT-Permian Basin. Tip-off for the women’s game is set for 6:00 p.m. The Lady Aggies will also play at home on Friday night against Johnson & Wales (7:00 start).
