60-47
by Scott Puryear of OPSU Sports on 2/11/07
Goodwell, Okla. - On Saturday night in Austin, Texas
the Oklahoma Panhandle State women’s basketball team
went up against a good Heartland Conference rival, the Hilltoppers
of St. Edward’s University. The Hilltoppers got the
win, 60-47.
The Hilltoppers came out as the hot team against the Lady
Aggies, who were also victimized by their own turnovers
and several close shots that just would not fall. At the
half, a very physical St. Edward’s team held a 38-20
lead.
In
the second half, the Lady Aggies played better and narrowed
the lead to 48-36 with ten minutes remaining in the game.
OPSU continued to relentlessly chip away at the Hilltoppers
and cut the margin to 51-41 with four minutes left to play.
Pressing hard and working for victory all the way to the
final buzzer, the Lady Aggies came up short in the end,
60-47.
Megan Hamilton was the high scorer for OPSU with a game
high 15 points and Val Boothe - a hardworking senior - played
very well at both ends of the court, scoring a career best
11 points, including a hard fought ten in the second half.
OPSU coach Jerry Olson was pleased with the perseverance
of his squad, noting that even though they were down by
as many as 20 points, they continued to play hard for the
entire game and fought hard all the way.
The Lady Aggies (7-16) will be back on their home court
on Thursday with a non-conference game against Fort Hays
State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
